V, X, Y and Z Trench Motar Batteries, 23rd Div, Royal Artillery were situated in the northern part of the line during the Battle of Messines around the area of Hill60 and The Caterpillar mines. V.23 Heavy Trench Mortar Battery was formed in March 1916 and was disbanded in late October 1917 X.23 Medium Trench Mortar Battery was raised as 12th TM Bty in 1915 and joined the 23rd Division in January 1916, being redesignated as X Battery in March 1916 Y.23 Medium Trench Mortar Battery was raised as 21st TM batt in 1915 and joined the 23rd Division in January 1916 being redesignated as Y Battery on 15 March 1916 Z.23 Medium Trench Mortar Battery was formed in March 1916 and initially was armed with French 58mm mortars.
