Schnapps Glass

Trenchboards

Schnapps Glass.

This Schnapps Glass was found in the German line not far from Ultimo Crater, in Avril's trench. The team also discovered the neck of a broken Schnapps bottle and the remains of a cauldron and a hearth in this small timber lined feature. All evidence of small comforts in the front line, there are many photographs of German dugouts made homely with items "borrowed" from abandoned cottages, perhaps this beautiful little glass had been acquired or it may have been a soldier or officer's personal possession, a little reminder of home. Either way, the area in which it was found had been damaged by shellfire, the timber walls pushed inwards, rendering the cosy little space un-useable.
