3rd New Zeland Field Ambulance, New Zealand Medical Services served with the 1st New Zeland Division at the Battle of Messines in 1917. The Division arrived in the Ploesgsteert area at the beginning of March 1917, to prepare for the battle. 3rd New Zeland Field Ambulance, serving the left or northern subsector, took over the Advanced Dressing station at Charing Cross on the western edge of Ploegsteert Wood, not far from Hyde Park Corner at the foot of Hill 63. The three large concrete gas-proofed Nissen huts can still be seen today. The ADS was manned by one medical officer and 15 other ranks with a large car at thier disposal and was shared with the medical staff of the 3rd Australian Division.
There were two Regimental Aid Posts just behind the support lines on the eastern edge of Ploegsteert Wood, at "Dead Horse Corner" and "Rifle House" with trench tramways available for stretcher cases, taking them within 200 yards of the A.D.S. at Charing Cross. The good road through Romarin allowed easy evacuation of the wounded to the Main Dressing Station at at Nieppe from where the wounded were transported by road to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Trois Arbres.
